My grand, coastal dream home near the Bush compound!
Wild Maine blueberries in my tasty and warm pastry from Boulangerie: A Proper Bakery.
Notice the date of when Wells was founded. I just adore old, East coast towns!
They may not now how to spell it but they sure do know how to make doughnuts! Mmmm!
Apparently Maine is known for whoopie pies. We made these and they were quite good!
Oh Maine, your magnificent and delightful coast makes me so cheerful! For Christmas, my parents and husband bought me tickets to fly out to the southern coast of Maine to visit my sister and her family. I was so completely overjoyed with the present that I started streaming tears of happiness. My little nieces and nephew seem more to me like little sisters and a brother. They are just so sweet and I have missed them dearly! When they picked me up, all five of them ran to me and gave me a group hug, it was the best feeling ever! During my stay in Wells and the neighboring Kennebunkport, I wanted to experience everything the gorgeous coast of Maine had to offer and we did just that.
Wild blueberries were a must and reminded me of the children’s book that takes place in Maine. The heartwarming book is called Blueberries for Sal, and I loved reading it when I was a child. I ate a warm blueberry turnover from Boulangerie, A Proper Bakery, to get my blueberry fix! The Boulangerie also sells homemade dog biscuits and all of the proceeds go to the local shelter.
Lobsters and clams are obviously a must when visiting Maine. There are many places to eat a variety of fresh lobster dishes, including Alisson’s Restaurant, The Clam Shack, Mabels Lobster Claw, and The Landing Store. I seriously need to move to the east coast so I can have fresh seafood everyday! Lobster rolls, clam chowder, lobster mac & cheese, lobster chowder, steamed clams…. the list goes on and on!
The Nubble Lighthouse on the coast of nearby Cape Neddick is just how I picture Maine. Hmmm, I wonder if I could convince Shawn that living in this gorgeous lighthouse is a great idea and totally affordable. If he isn’t convinced, I guess I could settle for a grand seaside mansion with a few acres of land for Lucy to run around on next to the Bush compound. Ha ha!
Whoopie pies are apparently a popular treat in the local eateries and we decided that we should make some to try. They are surprisingly good and remind me of a homemade Oreo but they are fluffier and the filling is more marshmallow like. The delicious recipe we used can be found here. If you don’t bake, Congdons Doughnuts makes delicious whoopee pies and come in a variety of sizes.
During the summer, take a good book, pack a picnic basket and head to the beach for a day of seaside relaxation. If you wish to take a pre-made lunch, many of the gourmet restaurants offer takeout and you can simply put it in a basket for a delicious, seafood feast. Here is a list of the prettiest beaches near Kennebunkport and Wells.
